Errors and omissions in the G.R.O Index data

The data in the FreeBMD website is transcribed by our volunteers from scans of pages in the General Register Office(G.R.O) indexes. These indexes were created by copying selected information from certificates, pooling it centrally, and creating an index by hand. The format of these indexes has changed over time, from handwritten pages, to typed pages, then to computer printout. The quality of the scans we have been given access to (often a scan of fiche or microfilm, which is itself a copy of the source page) has also varied - some are very hard to read.

If you find that an entry on a transcribed page is missing from FreeBMD and you don't have the scan, follow these steps:

Perform a wildcard search to find nearby entries on the page.

Select the entry immediately before the missing one.

Download the scan and submit a report.

Select 'Data is missing' (you now have the scan).

Enter the details of the missing entry in the form. You only need to complete the fields that are different from the previous entry.

If more than one entry is missing, enter the details for the first missing entry and also tick the Multiple entries box.
A record is missing from the G.R.O index scan

We cannot do anything about data missing from the G.R.O. If you believe that a record is missing from the G.R.O index you will need to contact them to discuss.

If you receive resolution from the G.R.O, please share this information with us.
E.g. scan image not clear, or a particular Year/Quarter/Event has a page missing etc.
